Florida State College Extends a Helping Hand

Florida State College at Jacksonville is partnering with Corporate Care Works and providing students with confidential consultations through the Student Assistance Program. The program is available day or night. There is a 24-hour helpline staffed with licensed counselors, a website packed with educational resources, and scheduled appointments for face-to-face support. The Student Assistance Program is a new service for students to assist them with things that get in the way of their lives while they are attending school... It’s basically every conceivable stress, strain, issue and problem that the general population feels. ”~Dr. Pete Biegel, Associate Vice President, Enrollment Management

“Student Assistance Program is a new service for students to assist them with things that get in the way of their lives while they are attending school,” says Dr. Pete Biegel, AVP of Enrollment Management.

The program is available day or night. There is a 24-hour helpline staffed with licensed counselors, a website packed with educational resources, and scheduled appointments for face-to-face support. All of these services are available to any Florida State College student for free.

"I believe it can really help with retention. Now [students] know they have a resource to go to... They can take a more proactive approach," says Traci Irven, Wellness Coordinator, Corporate Care Works.

Because of his position, Biegel is closely attuned to the College’s diverse student body, who range in age from 17 to 65. Biegel is acutely aware of the challenges that are faced by such a diverse group.

“It’s basically every conceivable stress, strain, issue and problem that the general population feels,” says Biegel. He points out that with all the various demands they have in their own personal lives, whether it’s family, work, children or health, the main thing they have in common is school. That’s why the College is offering this service.
