Student Spotlight: A Star is Sprayed!

By FSCJ Admin Mon, August 01, 2011 7:56 pm EDT

Meet Jane Cassingham! She is a student at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. She also landed the lead role of Tracy Turnblad in the musical “Hairspray,” the 2011 Summer Musical Theatre Experience at Florida State College at Jacksonville.

“I got a call from the director and she said that she wanted me to play Tracy, and I think my exact words were ‘You’re kidding’ because I didn’t believe her,” says Cassingham.

The Summer Musical Theatre Experience provides the opportunity for local area high-school students to work hands-on with local theatre professionals. The program is held for 8 weeks at the Wilson Center at South Campus.

Florida State College at Jacksonville has really brought a lot to people who are involved with this program. Now a days when there are so many cuts being made to programs in theater and in the arts, kids from all over the place, all over Jacksonville, it gives so many kids access to really good professional theater,” says Cassingham.

Take a look at the video and learn more about how Jane, a.k.a. 'Tracy', spent her summer vacation on a college campus.
