The Future of Communications: The Times-Union Editor Frank Denton

By Celine McArthur Fri, January 06, 2012 12:44 pm EDT

You’ve probably heard rumors about the ultimate demise of the printed newspaper. It’s true, some dailies have ceased printing paper editions or folded completely. Times-Union Editor Frank Denton says his paper isn’t folding—at least not without a major fight.

If there isn’t journalism being done by some significant portion of people, whatever media they use—in this country, you’ll have bigger things to worry about than what career [to pursue] because I don’t believe democracy can function without journalism—however it’s delivered. ”~Frank Denton, Editor, Florida Times-Union

If you call the Times-Union, you’re likely to hear the greeting “Times-Union Media,” a sign that they recognize and plan to stay in step with the changing ways in which people get their news. If you’re a news junkie or you’re pursuing a career in news, you’ll want to hear Denton explain to Florida State College Network how his news operation is evolving to not only survive, but to thrive in this competitive new world of communication.

With the Florida Department of Education’s approval, Florida State College is moving forward with plans to offer a Converged Communications Bachelor’s degree. Provided that the College receives the necessary approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the program is scheduled to launch in Fall 2012.

In the meantime, our Strategic Communications unit is creatively stimulating curiosity and ramping up awareness of the new degree by offering the Annenberg series “News Reporting” on the Florida State College Network, Comcast Cable channel 26.

This series, produced in 1995, boasts a who’s who of respected, interesting, award-winning journalists (Bob Woodward, Helen Thomas, Charles Kuralt and many others) who cover the basics of news writing and reporting.

Some things don’t change, such as good writing and reporting; some things, such as how news and information is delivered, have probably changed since you started reading this paragraph.

To address the dynamic world of news, information and communication, Strategic Communications is interviewing current local and national experts to get their perspective on where communications stands and where they believe it’s headed. They also offer some valuable advice to students interesting in following in their career paths.

For those of you who don't have Comcast, you can see all of the post-show interviews here. Please friend us and send us your feedback on Facebook.
